Hardly anybody could imagine how life used to be without Facebook, and now especially Instagram, since that seems to be easier to access while carrying a smartphone wherever we go and Facebook likes to remain a mess.
But to say that it is a problem would actually distract from what's really a cause for concern.
If you have an Instagram account, ask yourself those questions:
- What is the main reason you have it?
- Why do you post something?
- How many posts do you make on average a day and why so few or many?
- What are you trying to gain from it?
- Would you be frustrated if your account would get deleted? If yes, why?
If most of your answers have got something to do with likes, followers or business, then you might be doing it for fame!
So is that a problem? Not really.
But let me get to the real issue on IG (obviously everybody who has it knows what IG stands for).
A lot of people who have thousands of followers place themselves above others, they believe that because they gain many likes it actually makes them popular or even famous (known as Insta Famous)
Then there are those who brag about having followers and even take them all for granted!
The worst kind of IG people are those who claim to be one of the first accounts of a certain category, who call themselves one of the "originals". Come on, what the hell is that even supposed to mean?
Have you created Instagram? And are you even aware of how many millions of people have had it before you probably ever heard of it? Have you seen every single account that exists? So how can you even assume to be one of the first, best or realist?
Have you ever come across people who try to tell you how to run your account? People who judge you based on your posts as if they would actually know you in person?
I mean who are you to be playing police on Instagram and dictate others how to run their accounts, who to follow and what to post?
Since I personally have thousands of followers myself, I often get to hear how I should run my account, what to post and what not to do! I've came across many people who think they know if somebody practices what they preach! What about you? Do you practice what you preach?
Are you that person you claim to be on IG? Or are you just another fraud trying to gain fame from the game? Game?
Yeah that's basically what Instagram has become, a place where people are competing on who's the realest, oldest and first account, most popular and highest in ranking;
The Hunger Games of Social Media!
How not to feed into it and fall into the trap of this epidemic?
Just be yourself, don't brag about anything, practice what you preach but don't let others dictate you on how to run your account! Engage in conversations, motivate and help others out rather than placing yourself above them. Most importantly, remember that it's just social media, a simple app on your phone that can be removed with just one click...
Don't take it so seriously and focus on what really matters!
When you are at a restaurant, how about not taking a photo of the food you are eating and just enjoying it! Seriously, when you’re spending time with people who truly mean something to you, just keep your phone in you pocket (or bag, maybe even leave it at home or in the car for once). Enjoy your life! Let me repeat that, enjoy your LIFE! Yes, your real one! You are not a robot, so stop behaving like one!
Stop looking down, start looking up and see for yourself how your life is going to improve...
