The Obama administration is now able to bypass Congress unconstitutionally and even worse, it let's the administration pass anti-user trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)!
What exactly is the TPP most might wonder;
The answer is...
We don't know!
Well, we can only assume what it is through documents that have been leaked by wikileaks and through other rumors and speeches!
So what do we know so far?
The TPP is the largest Trade deal in History which includes 12 countries:
It covers everything from Pharmaceuticals, Digital Copyright Law and can change how the world interacts with the economy! The TPP has been negotiated almost entirely in secret with the help of about 600 private corporations! The TPP is the prototype to another secret deal between the US and the EU, known as the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) for which President Obama initiated negotiations in January 2013!
The TPP and TTIP will cover together more than 60% of the global GDP.
TPP isn't really a free trade deal as it is a giant give away to big transnational corporations.
The TPP would allow private foreign corporations to sue countries, over regulations they don't like. It would allow them to expand the monopoly of Pharmaceutical patterns and also give corporations the green light to start blocking websites accused to violating copyright law.
National sovereignty, public health, and internet freedom would all be sacrificed for the TPP; all in the name of helping private corporations keep CEO's wallets fat and their shareholders happy!
So what makes the TPP so bad and dangerous? Here's a list of things that should cause reason for concern:
- Gives corporations more power
- Corporate Tyranny
- Free Trade hurts people and planet
- Corporate property rights over protection of people and environment
- Would strengthen corporations and increase their profits even if it meant the suffering of the people
- Drug companies can increase prices
- NAFTA on Steroids
- Corporations can get rid of regulations
- Foreign trade partners can challenge american laws
- Loss of internet freedom
And now to who might benefit the most from the TPP!
While every year more people become more aware of which company is known to be the most evil, and more people take it to the streets, it is important to keep the momentum going and to tackle the biggest company behind the TPP:
So how exactly would Monsanto benefit?
The TPP would make gmo labeling entirely avoidable! This means that we the people wouldn't have any say or knowledge at all in what goes in our food, where it comes from or how it is produced! As if that weren't bad enough, Monsanto would higher the amount of glyphosate and other chemicals such as roundup which is killing the bees and other insects that are essential to our survival by millions!
That is why the TPP is so dangerous and scary at the same time, more than "normal" trade deals such as NAFTA and CAFTA! Not only does it reward companies that send jobs overseas to keep big business in check, it also increases corporate control over every part of how we interact with the world and makes it almost impossible to fight back against giant corporations!
As Julian Assange said:
If you read, write publish, think, listen, dance, sing or invent;
if you farm or consume food;
if you're ill now or might one day be ill,
the TPP has you in its crosshairs!
In other words:
It puts the rights of profit driven business over the rights of human beings and the governments that WE formed to protect ourselves.
No wonder then that the Obama administration doesn't even want congress to take a closer look at the TPP!
To push the U.S. in the proposed treaty as soon as possible, Obama has used a special legislated trick called fast-tracking which prevents law makers from making any amendments to the TPP. Instead the treaty will now be send right to the floor where it would only have to pass a simple majority vote!
If the TPP passes, control over not just our food but our health, environment and our financial system will be in the hands of transnational corporations!
The time to fight back and stop the TPP is almost over!
